Seeing as the new Love Live! Anime has already aired multiple episodes, I'm pretty behind on the bandwagon. Even still, I want to take you all on the journey with me of watching and assessing our new idols, and seeing if the new series can stand up to the original.
I haven't seen anything but a single trailer and pictures of the girls so far, so I'm not starting out with many biases. (I've avoided spoilers for this exact reason!) Even still, my loyalty to Muse and its members makes me a little nervous about watching Love Live! Sunshine!! for two reasons:
1) I'm afraid it will be a shell of the first anime, and therefore taint my Love Live! obsession. Seeing as there's no new merchandise or such coming out for the Muse girls, it's been difficult for me to cope with the disbanding of their group. If Sunshine!! can't live up to the Love Live! reputation, I'll be very disappointed.
2) What is I like Aqours MORE than Muse?? I've spent so much time collecting figures, prints, and any other merch I can get my hands on - what if I like a character from Sunshine!! so much that I want to redo my room in Aqours?
To be fair, my second concern is probably not going to happen. Even if I do absolutely love the new series, the first Love Live! will always be special to me. I'm more concerned about all the money I'll need to spend in order to decorate in Aqours merch. We'll just have to wait and see what happens, I guess.
Before I start watching and forming opinions, let's take a look at our new idols, shall we?
Based solely on aesthetics, my favourite character so far is Ruby Kurosawa, followed very closely by Mari Ohara. Ruby was honestly my first pick from the moment I saw her, and considering my favourite Muse girls were Maki and Niko it should be pretty obvious as to why. Red hair, pigtails, and an adorable face? Yup, count me in! Mari, on the other hand, makes the list because of a strange connection my mind made between her and Eli's sister, Alisa. For some reason, when I first saw Mari, I was convinced she was Alisa with a cute new hair-do, ready to be an idol! I was honestly a little disappointed, seeing as I very much want to see Alisa as an idol one day, but the connection has been made and it's hard to break it based on aesthetics alone. I do love the blonde hair though, and since it reminds me of the Ayase sisters, I'm a little smitten with her at the moment. We'll see how both Ruby and Mari's personalities weigh in after watching a few episodes - hopefully they'll still be on the top of the list.
My bottom picks which are, again, going by looks only, consist of Chika Takami and You Watanabe. There's just nothing very special that stands out to me about them, even though I believe Chika is our new center girl. Her look actually bothers me for some reason; I'm huge on hair when it comes to anime aesthetics, and Chika's falls flat in the weirdest ways, which is a huge turnoff. It doesn't look good for her as I see her now. Here's hoping both Chika and You have great personalities that will win me over!
The rest of Aqours are all sufficiently in limbo for now. Hanamaru Kunikida looks promising; as long as she has a good personality I'm sure she'll make it into the favourites. As far as the last four go - Dia Kurosawa, Kanan Matsuura, Yoshiko Tsushima, and Riko Sakurauchi - they all look pretty similar, so it's hard to tell where they'll fall in the long run.
As far as the music goes, I've painstakingly kept myself from listening to any of the singles I know are already released and bombarding me on YouTube. I will be waiting to view them within the anime itself before making any comments on them, as I didn't listen to songs outside of the anime on my first watch of the original Love Live!
That's pretty much all I can comment on for now, but I'll be posting more content after watching the first episode!
Thanks for reading!
